Dealer Plates

For your convenience, the Louisiana Used Motor Vehicle Commission now offers dealer inventory plates. 

What is the cost of a dealer inventory plate?
  • Autos, trucks, tractor, trailers, semi-trailers & buses – FEE – $15.00 each plate (plus $10.00 convenience fee per plate) 
  • Motorcycles – FEE – $15.00 each plate (plus $10.00 convenience fee per plate)
  • Transporters – FEE – $15.00 each plate (plus $10.00 convenience fee per plate)
  • Handicapped Autos & Trucks – FEE – $15.00 each plate (plus $10.00 convenience fee per plate)
How do I apply for a dealer inventory plate?

For same day service, you may visit our office and apply for a dealer inventory plate in person.

You may mail your application and payment to our office. Your plate will be mailed to you. Expect turnaround 7 business days from the date of receipt of your application.

* All dealer dealer inventory plate applications must be accompanied by a copy of your dealer license and proof a liability insurance. 

In order for a license salesperson to receive a dealer inventory plate, that salesperson must be listed as a driver on the garage liability policy.

A separate application must be completed for each dealer inventory plate needed.

How many dealer inventory plates may I possess?

Each licensed dealer may possess three (3) dealer inventory plates.

Each licensed & insured salesperson may possess one (1) dealer inventory plate. 

What the can I use a dealer inventory plate for?

R.S. 47:473 (F)

Plates shall allow the dealer to which the plate issued to operate any motor vehicle which is held by that dealer as inventory for any purpose which is related to offering the motor vehicle for sale. displaying or exhibiting the motor vehicle to the public, to demonstrating the qualities of the motor vehicle, or to maintaining or enhancing the condition or the value of the motor vehicle.

R.S. 47:473 (H)

Dealers may authorize employees of educational institutions or licensed sales representatives of the dealer, or both, to use for any purpose, a motor vehicle to which the dealer has attached a dealer inventory plate, provided the arrangement does not constitute renting or leasing the vehicle to the employee or sales representative. 

*  Any other use of a dealer inventory plate, as described on R.S. 47:473 (F)(H), is strictly prohibited.

*  A licensed dealer found to be in violation of R.S. 47:473 (F)(H) may be subject to fines and/or action taken against the license.
